I decided to settle the spearmint into their own container. They were literally bursting through the nursery starter pots and I know that they will take over whatever container I give them. I figured I might as well just let them go crazy from the start. I planted them yesterday afternoon. I expect all of those little tiny leaves to start spreading out shortly.
The lavender and aloe also made it into their respective spots yesterday. The aloe pot had all of those leaves on top, so I just scattered the leaves over the bed again. HTH laughed and asked if I wanted them to feel at home. I figure compost is supposed to be started with leaves anyway, so it can't hurt!
HTH and his dad, again, did a really cool thing for my herb bed. They installed a gutter over the bed so that the plants don't get hammered by the heavy roof overflow. Then they ran it over to this downspout. Very nice, right? But what, you may ask, is up with that concrete block? THAT is part of the cool part.
Straight from the mind of HTH, we have here a rain collection system. This bucket was used for food grade material before he cleaned it out for me. He then added this rain gutter joint on the top.
Once the seams around the top have been sealed - so that no mosquitoes can get in - this top will fit over the bottom of the downspout. Presto! Instant rain water for my plants without smushing them! Cool, huh?
Now on to the wows!
My little herbs have been quite busy since Monday. This little fuzz of dill in the middle of the plant was barely visible when I planted the thing. Happy sign from the plant and how cool is that?
And look at these little bitty leaves in the center of this oregano! I know, I know, I'm easily amazed, but this is SO COOL!
But this is my favorite. I had no idea that rosemary had such lovely and delicate flowers. The leaves in this picture are about as long as my pinky finger, so that should give you some sense of scale. But WOW! How cool is that!

That oregano picture is amazing! I am so glad that this project has brought to you so much happiness. Even the "house that resists change" is happy.
Any of you in the wetter states may be interested in the rain collection bucket because it will not let mosquitoes nest there. They can only get to the water by way of the down spot!
See? I DO have to go look at them all of the time. Otherwise I might miss something cool!
Wow this is fun! What a great idea for a cistern - clever man. Of course we would have filled the bucket here either yesterday or maybe twice day before yesterday. But the day may come when we need it! And the pretty flowers make me want to find a place for my own rosemary - and other herbs.
oh it looks lovely!! springtime is round the corner here so inspired by you (and with JD safely away in Sweden) I think I will start the plans for the summer garden this weekend. get some seeds into pots or something.
