Playing in the Dirt
As you can see, I spent some time with my hands in the dirt this weekend! And, believe it or not, this is AFTER I washed my hands a few times. I suspect this says more than I'd like to discuss about my personal planting style...
But this was a good weekend for getting the seedlings into the ground. Some of them - especially the bell peppers - were starting to work their way out of their starter pots. And the weather is lovely - a bit unseasonably warm, but not too hot. Lots of sun. Cool nights. And the Mediterranean bed was almost ready - with the bottom layer of "urbanite" (check the alternate definition in this answer) already in place for drainage, I just needed some good dirt.
I was waiting patiently for the dirt that will be dug up when we build a small concrete pad behind the shop, but I made one tactical error. I went to the Desert Botanical Gardens Fall Plant Sale. I got Lemon Balm, and Yellow Potato Onion, and Catnip (in the pot) and peppermint and chocolate mint and yarrow. Yeah, I spent about $30 - which is more than I spent for my entire current seed stock of 30 plants! AND I had to fill the bed mostly with garden soil due to the impatience that this plethora of plants brought on!
But it was SO worth the money! I now have a full Med bed and two earth boxes (for the bell pepper, cayenne pepper and onion) that are planted with 3 kinds of oregano, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, sage and everything that I already mentioned. My hands LOOK dirty, but they smell so good. We'll see how everyone does with the move. I'll take more pics in a couple of weeks!

O it looks so good now; if half of it turns out usable you'll be happy. That potato onion thing - you have to keep us posted on that!!
It is all a big experiment, so we'll see how it goes!
