And now for something completely different....
The Green Summit has, as I said earlier, started me on to a number of new research ideas. But I did have a few projects and plans already in the works that are bearing fruit of one kind another. So, here are a few stories from various fronts.
V & I bought tickets for the Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker show in Flagstaff. This was, for those of you who have not heard, our birthday present to each other. Our birthdays are 4 days apart and - we're fairly certain - this is the first birthday we've spent together since 1987. So we figured some moderate extravaganza was in order. Turns out that this was the best plan we may have had in many, many moons.
Flagstaff this time of year feels SO NICE. We still see temperatures over 100 every day and while the lows are finally dropping off a bit at night, it is still typically 75 for the low. By now, the whole summer thing is just done. PLEASE, LET IT BE DONE! But Flagstaff is almost 7000 feet up, so 75 is the HIGH for this time of year. (*sigh*) It was lovely!
But this trip also clearly 24 hours of randomness that I apparently was needing. Just one quick story to illustrate. While we were waiting for the doors to open (sound check ran VERY late) we met the "Resident Elder and Mayan Traditional Knowledge Scholar at NAU" (see her pic here) who was waiting for her bus - which also was running very late. We talked for almost 15 minutes and, when I mentioned that I've just started growing some herbs and traditionally medicinal plants, she invited me to come back up to attend her Mayan Herbology class in October. She said that, if I e-mail her before I come, she will bring me cuttings from her garden! Flagstaff is, of course, a small town and things work a bit differently there. But, still. How random!
Of course, mentioning growing things, the basil, dill and chamomile are all still growing away. I'm finally seeing a parsley sprout. The 4 types of new oregano (that I ordered with the Lifeline seeds) are all sprouting after only 3 days in the window sill boxes! And I have some Stinging Nettle, Marshmallow, and Evening Primrose already making appearances there as well. They are growing so much faster than I was expecting. I hope I get the beds ready on time!
Of course - and this is the big news I guess - I may have some help with that. Based on a meeting today, HTH may have found his very first, full time employee. If all goes according to plan, he will start on Monday. He wants 40 hours of work a week, but HTH may not have that in technical field work, so he will also work on house projects. Maybe I should go sketch out my plans for herb beds...

Since I'm not doing what I'm SUPPOSED to be doing anyway...
I keep finding myself sucked back in to the TV coverage of the hurricane currently in Louisiana - and predictions about the next 2. Several things that I was planning to do today are just not happening. So, while I'm not doing anything on my list, here are pictures from my window ledge greenhouses. I bring you extremely small basil and chamomile!

The week in pictures
It has been another busy week. I'm just basically posting pictures with a few comments cuz I am TIRED!
This has been one of my thrift store (that's charity shop to you, Eva) searches for the last month or so. As you can see here, my pastas and cereals are all in sealed glass containers now. Functional and lovely.
Here is the van that I mentioned in the last post. I would show you the inside, but I'm not sure how HTH feels about having the chaos of his work week shown on the blog...

This closet used to be full. Nuff said.

This one, too. Of course, this is mostly empty due to the fact that our new bed is bigger than our old one. Note to self: must buy sheets to fit new bed.

And this is a bit of randomness. We had a sweet potato and turnip that both started growing on the counter. So we planted them. Sweet potato on the left and turnip on the right. Fall salad, anyone?
And, last but not least, my sister is "Not Listening". But she did make a very cute skirt today.

Doing - not talking about it
As you can imagine, this is a very busy time for me. Just learning the details of all of the business and family finances would keep me fairly busy since that adds up to 2 credit card accounts for expenses, and a total of 5 different bank accounts, not to mention invoices, bills and receipts! But I am also continuing to adhere to my Lighten Up principals - which are not quite yet automatic - and keep my old job 20 hours a week. And it really didn't help that I spent almost a full week trying to figure out which post-stress mineral/hormone depletion was making me crazy.
So, today, just a random list of things that I have learned.
So, today, just a random list of things that I have learned.
- 150 micrograms can make a WORLD of difference.
- Statement to account to current balance reconciliation is really a difficult and nasty thing.
- All of the pictures that I want to keep (from the days before digital cameras) fit in a shoe box.
- Spraying peroxide followed by vinegar really does kill anything. You should see my shower grout!
- Microfiber cloths are the wave of the cleaning future.
- Don't even try to do anything involving retail, groceries, movies or hair cuts the weekend before school starts. You will have no luck.

Moodling
Despite the fact that HTH caught a cold on the plane, he still managed to get my computer back together today. Have I mentioned that I am a very spoiled woman?
But, though many things have happened in the last several weeks, I find myself in the position of having them all still running around in the back of my head. I have had zero moodling time to sort them out, much less to turn them into coherent posts for you! So, instead, here are two completely random pictures from the Louisiana part of my trip.
